Nef Martinez, President – B. Cumming Co. aka Elbow Grease

I began my employment with this company in January 1991. I was hired as a warehouse employee. A few years later I was promoted to office clerk, then I moved on to the sales department, after a while I was promoted to head the sales department. I eventually started overseeing the day to day operations and was promoted to Vice President. On August 2016 I purchased the company.

A typical day:
My day starts out very early, I’m up at 5:00 am and in the office by 7:00 am. I like to come in before anybody else does so I can catch up on paperwork, look over the plans for the day.

The most significant influence in my working career was:
My parents! They have always been such hard workers (they are retired now). They instilled in me the concept of not just being satisfied with doing a job but doing the best job possible! They taught me to be proud of my daily accomplishments. To treat everyone as I want to be treated with respect regardless of their circumstances and accomplishments.

I’m most proud of:
My mother, my father and my wife! They have all taught me patience, hard work, honesty, equality, kindness, I could go on forever, I am so very proud of them.

One of the most memorable moments was:
When I graduated from college. I became the first member of my immediate family to become a college graduate.

Last book I read was:
My taste in books varies, I read anything and everything, at present I am reading George R.R. Martin’s, A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms. It’s the prequel to his Game of Thrones book series.

Favourite movie/TV show:
My favorite movie of all times I have a couple: Shawshank Redemption, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Of Mice and Men. TV shows: Too many to name, especially nowadays with Netflix and HBO.

What I wanted to be:
I wanted to become an agronomist. I have always enjoyed working outdoors with plants and the soil. I like planting and watching nature take over.

What would most people not know:
That I am fluent in a third language – ASL (American Sign Language)

My favourite place:
I have a few places that I love but the one I always go back to is Wilbur Hot Springs. It’s a great place to meditate, think, enjoy nature but mainly I love it there because I get to have an “electronic detox”. Due to this place remoteness, electronic toys become obsolete.

When I’m not working:
you will most likely find me at the gym working out. This is where I go to clear my head, my thoughts and I concentrate on the present.

What I like best about my job:
Everything! I love our brand, our customers, our staff, our industry friends, I mean, this is a fun industry!

If I could change one thing:
Wow, this is a loaded question. Too many things to mention here, too many things to change but the one thing that I am actively trying to do my part in is minimizing my carbon footprint. We actively recycle as much as we possibly can at the office/warehouse and at home.
